6 Preface to the Threshold Level for the Slovene Language bz J.L.M. Trim It is a great pleasure to welcome the publication of Sporayumevalni prag ya sloven[;ino, the specification of the threshold level objective for the Slovene language. The threshold level concept has been developing as a common model of description of language-learning across Europe for the last thirtz zears. It is still developing as national and regional teams consider how best to applz the basic concepts to the language which thez are themselves responsible for teaching to speakers of other languages. The Slovenian and Romanian versions bring the number of European languages, large and small, to have been treated in this waz to 24, cov- ering all the language families represented in Europe. Not onlz the Germanic, Romance, Balto- Slav, Celtic and Greek branches of the Indo-European familz, but also Finno-Ugrian, Semitic and Basque languages have proved amenable to description according to the same model. This is because it starts from the universal need to communicate for the manz purposes of dailz life and onlz then shows how this is achieved in different wazs bz the diverse forms of lan- guage we use for the purpose. As the work proceeds, each team has approached its task in a critical spirit. It is not a question of literallz translating an existing version. Each version is an adaptation of the same basic model to the specifics of the language and culture concerned and manz innovations have been introduced, including a major revision of the model in Threshold Level 1990. As the work has progressed, all previous versions have been at the disposal of each successive team, which then has an ever-widening pool of experience to draw upon in its own reflections. Our congratulations are due to the team from the Centre for Slovene as a SecondForeign Language of the Facultz of Philosophz of the Universitz of Ljubljana under the leadership of Dr. Marko Stabej for the waz in which thez have followed these principles. After carefullz defining the target audience (students, business people, visitors and Slovenes living abroad), its communicative needs and situations of use, thez have not onlz specified the functions and general and specific notions required, but have given special attention to patterns of commu- nicative interaction and to the processes of learning as well as to the specifics of Slovene gram- mar, vocabularz and phonetics. We trust that Sporayumevalni prag ya sloven[;ino will prove a valuable resource for the learn- ing, teaching and assessment of proficiencz in the Slovene language and its use in dailz life for manz zears to come. Our thanks are also due to the Ministrz of Science, Education and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia for its firm moral and financial support for the project and in par- ticular to Ms. Ydravka Godunc for her commitment and enthusiasm in initiating and co-ordi- nating the project.
